BALLROOM

This is a graceful style of dance that can be enjoyed by young and old, male or female – an essential social skill.  Over recent years, it has been popularised by the “Strictly Come Dancing” series as well as films such as “Shall We Dance” starring Richard Gere. Ballroom (or Standard as it is sometimes known) is couples dancing.

LATIN AMERICAN

Latin American dances (Rumba, Samba, Cha Cha Cha, Paso Doble, Jive) all originate from Cuba and are related to Club dances such as the Mambo and Salsa. The music is popular and lively and the dance steps provide an excellent form of exercise that really works the leg muscles.  Suited to any age or ability.  Latin American dancing is couples dancing.

OLD TIME (CLASSICAL SEQUENCE)

Old Time dancing is couples dancing, and is a popular form of Ballroom dancing. The name ‘Old Time’ can be misleading, as many of the popular dances have been arranged over more recent years. Every couple on the floor does the same steps at the same time, and many of the dances have been arranged to special music and so have their own tune.  Each dance is of a 16 (or occasionally 32) bar sequence.  The basis of Old Time is ballet technique combined with Ballroom and Latin.

MODERN OR LATIN SEQUENCE DANCING

This combines the styles of Old Time and Ballroom or Latin, working Ballroom and Latin figures into 16 bar sequences.  Sequence dancing is couples dancing.

DISCO

To be enjoyed by those who want to keep fit and have lots of energy.  Not for those who don’t like hard work! Disco dances can be done solo, in couples or in teams.

ROCK’N’ROLL

The dance form that became very popular during the 1950’s, although originally dating back to the 1920’s.  Energetic for children – an ideal way to keep fit, or more gentle for adults, but still an excellent form of exercise.  Rock’n’Roll is a couples dance.

LINE DANCING

Line Dancing is where dancers perform pre-set routines in lines. Everyone starts at the same time, dances the same steps in synchronization with everyone else and finishes with the end of the music.  The dances vary in difficulty and the style of music, whilst traditionally of Country & Western origin, now covers a wide variety of popular music. Line Dancing is a solo dance form, but Couples dancing can also be done.

SALSA

Salsa is the end result of mixing a range of dance steps and rhythms together.  The speed of Salsa can vary from quite a slow tempo to very fast, therefore learning Salsa can be quite physically demanding.  Salsa is a couples dance.
